The Orgasm Raygun - 'A very silly film indeed' was the comment of the British Council's film department. And so it became a British cultural export.
The idea for the Orgasm Raygun came from the work of the poet Martin Newell, a friend of director Martin Gooch. Gooch had clapper-loaded on the short Green Monkey and had given a copy of his screenplay the Orgasm Raygun to the Whatever Pictures team. Having been knocked back on a pop promo and hearing that his mother was going away on holiday, Bruce made a decision to shoot the film the following week. They scratched together £500 for the food and film. Alex mother's house was taken over and Bruce's mums drink cabinet and freezer were used to water and feed the crew.Footing the bill to get ORG back onto 35mm Whatever Pictures teamed with expert post production from SVC's Matt Hall and Laura Smith. Corrections and Fido transfer were provided by Martin's old employer's Cinesite UK. Martin's inspired decision to use Leslie Phillips for the voice-over was confirmed as a blinder, rounding off the Carry On feel of the film. Though there were problems with the Bolex's age and reliability when it came to post production the film made it back onto 35mm print. Delivered in June 1999 the film has starred in international tours and festivals
